Hey Again! December 2012 Gigs!

First off, I'll be reading my story Ballads of Rusty Magee at the great Soundtrack Series at Poisson Rouge at 158 Bleecker. Come on down and hear stories inspired by songs.

Also, my band, THE CYNTHIA KAPLAN ORDEAL, once again has some awesome gigs coming up with the excellent and very tall songman Sean Altman and the luscious percussionist Mike Hunter (height unknown). Don't blame me if you bring children under 15 and they turn into pimps and hos.

Also, don't forget to check out my video of Merry Christmas to You! And send it around to your friends. And friend The Cynthia Kaplan Ordeal on Facebook.

And donate to some worthy cause! In fact, if you bring a printed receipt from a December donation to a gig, I'll give you a free CD. Unless I don't like your cause, and then you can forget it.

People of the Web: the Few, the Proud!

The New Jack Paar Show! It's May and we're back at a shiny new time: 9:30 p.m.

What's the New Jack Paar Show? It is the live talk/variety show hosted by humorist and CBS Morning Show commentator Nancy Giles and and author and comedian Cynthia Kaplan.

What happened to April's show? It was a cruel month. Move on.

This month's guests:

Ann Leary: Breaking news: Ann is sitting in for Nancy, who is "busy." (Read: alternate Endeavor crew member. You didn't hear it here.) Anyway, Ann is the author of the hilarious memoir An Innocent, a Broad and the acclaimed novel Outtakes from a Marriage, and is the co-host with fellow authors Julie Klam and Laura ZIgman of NPR's new radio show "Hash Hags."

Tom Shillue: Tom is originally from Norwood, Massachusetts and is a writer and comedian who has been seen in his own Comedy Central Presents stand-up special, on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and in his own segment on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. His autobiographical monologues have become a fixture in the New York downtown comedy scene, at shows like Moonwork's Evening of Original Works. Tom was recently named New York's "Best Storyteller" at the annual ECNY awards.

Julie Klam: Julie has written for tons of magazines including Rolling Stone, O, and The New York Times Magazine. She was nominated for an Emmy award for Outstanding writing on Pop-Up Video. Her most recent book was the New York TImes Bestseller You Had Me At Woof . She lives in NYC with her husband, daughter and dogs.

Julia Darling: Julia is one of those rare artists who has built a career outside of the music industry--which is just a way of saying "it's really hard to get record deals." She did, however, release her third album earlier this year and continues to write, record and play music. (Editor's note: That album, Everything that has Happened Since Then is in heavy rotation at Cindy's house.)

Steven Seagal: A friend of the NJP Show, the actor and martial artist stops by for a casual catch-up with Cindy and Ann. A not-to-be-missed three-way.

Dear Four People a Week Who Visit This Site

The eagle has landed!

My new comedy rock album, FANGRY, by my band, The Cynthia Kaplan Ordeal, is here!

"The Cynthia Kaplan Ordeal is the love child of Jonathan Coulton and Tenacious D, had they been a couple, or, really, a threesome."--Rolling Stone Magazine.

Okay, I said that, not Rolling Stone. Whatever.

What? you exclaim. She has a band and sings songs? What the fuck? I thought she was a writer.

Well, I have also been writing and performing comedy and music, sometimes the two together, for lo these three hundred years or so. And I want you to hear it. Or, preferably, buy it.

FANGRY will be available at http://www.digstation.com by November 5th, and is coming soon to CDBaby and iTunes. The actual cd will also be sold by CDBaby, by me at gigs or at other times, or possibly just handed to you, if you are very nice, or bartered or as part of an in-kind trade.

Another New Jack Paar Show!

Another New Jack Paar Show!

Nancy Giles and Cynthia Kaplan are back with another show? So soon? Yes! And we plan to be going monthly starting in 2011, with one more show possibly coming up this year.

What's the New Jack Paar Show? In case you haven't been to one, it is a live talk/variety show hosted by humorist and CBS Morning Show commentator Nancy Giles and and author and comedian Cynthia Kaplan. There will be music, comedy, and very possibly the literary arts will be represented. And, of course, special guests every month.

Who? Since you ask, on Monday, October 25th you will see:

Mary Testa: A two-time TONY nominee, singer Testa has starred in such Broadway hits as On The Town, 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls, Xanadu (it ran and ran!) and Chicago, and has collaborated with the composers William Finn and Michael John LaChiusa. She has appeared in television and film, notably a regular on Whoopi Goldberg's Whoopi, as well as on Sex and the City and the recent Eat Pray Love.

Alyson Palmer & Tony Salvatore: Alyson is a member of the award-winning powerhouse rock band known as BETTY. Since 1986, Betty has recorded eight albums, has toured the world, and their music has been heard on television shows, in movies, in their own off-Broadway show, Betty Rules, and on the cable hit The L Word. Tony is the multi-talented guitarist behind the Tony Salvatore Trio, BETTY and Pleasuredog. He has performed with Jane Siberry, Tracy Bonham, Taj Mahal, GE Smith (SNL), and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls, among many others. He is also Cindy's guitar guru.

Kathryn Rossetter: An actor, director and teacher, Kathy has appeared on Broadway, in films, on television, and in several acclaimed one-woman shows. She is the recipient of a Tennessee Williams Theatre fellowship for developing the one-person show. Her current work, "Starving, Hysterical, Naked" is the result of that fellowship and is in development in NY.

Matt Damon:* International film star who also makes amusing forays into television and music video.

Possible Surprise Literary Guest: Dude is too famous to be pinned down.

The New Jack Paar Show is back!

Humorist and CBS Morning Show commentator Nancy Giles and I, Cynthia Kaplan, are returning to the West Bank Cafe with our award-winning live talk/variety show. Modeled, sort of, after the late Jack Paar's classic television program, The New Jack Paar Show will once again feature Nancy and my typically HILARIOUS take on current events, plenty of comedy and music, and special guests.

What guests you ask? Well, on Monday, October 4th you can expect to see:

GREGORY & JAMES WOLFE are founding members of the remarkable, long running downtown comedy show Moonwork. They have appeared on MTV and HBO (When they didn't have so much grey in their beards). After many open mic nights they are proud and excited to have their first real gig to show case their "Totally Appalachia" set.)

ANN LEARY, author of the hilarious memoir An Innocent, a Broad and the acclaimed novel Outtakes from a Marriage, is also the host of NPR's In House with Ann Leary, a show about interesting people and their homes.

SEAN ALTMAN The Washington Post calls Sean's renowned comedy song act JEWMONGOUS "bawdy with a wicked, modern streak," the Boston Globe raves "the tunefulness of the Beatles and the spot-on wit of Tom Lehrer," and Sean's mother chides "Your brother the MD makes a better living." Check out www.jewmongous.com and see JEWMONGOUS Christmas Eve at City Winery with special guest Cynthia Kaplan.

Plus, Nancy will probably do some stuff from one of her acclaimed one woman shows, and I will sing songs from FANGRY, my soon-to-be-released comedy/rock album (or cock album, as they say in the business.)

Don't miss it! Bring a friend if you have one.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail!

Hello Friend!

Just serving notice that I have and excellent Passover/Erev Easter show coming up at the 92nd Street Y in Tribeca. I don't know why they still call it the 92nd Street Y when it is not on 92nd street but that is their business. Frankly, I don't care.

Anyhow, I am joining the gleamingly talented Sean Altman and his rocking Jewmongous show (as I often do) for one night only--Saturday, April 3rd.

Please come. I'm hoping there is going to be alcohol there, but if you are worried about it, feel free to tank up beforehand.

Reservations: 212.601.1000
Address: 200 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10013.

Jacobs, that show-off, reading from his latest tome.

This will be fun. Maybe you'll hook-up with someone there. Who knows? Anyway, come on down.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen,

I have two excellent gigs coming up soon (next week) and would love to see any or all of you, particularly the Romans, at either or both of them. I will once again be a guest of the great Sean Altman, and I will be playing my extremely humorous songs (see below review), including, yes, that's right, a new song entitled "Vomit If You Must."

"One of downtown's coolest actors... If you're lucky, Kaplan will sing and play guitar, and then you'll laugh until you can't breathe."
—Time Out New York
